STS-103
STS-103 was Discovery's December 1999 Hubble Space Telescope servicing mission, flown after failures in Hubble's gyroscope system forced NASA to accelerate a repair flight. Curtis Brown commanded the mission with Scott Kelly as pilot and mission specialists Steven Smith, Michael Foale, John Grunsfeld, Claude Nicollier, and Jean-Francois Clervoy. Launched from Kennedy Space Center's Launch Complex 39B on December 19, the crew restored Hubble through three planned spacewalks that replaced gyroscopes and other hardware, returning the observatory to science service. Discovery landed at Kennedy Space Center's Shuttle Landing Facility on December 27, 1999, after a flight lasting just under eight days.
