STS-2 was NASA's second Space Shuttle orbital flight and the second flight of Columbia. Joe Engle and Richard Truly launched from Kennedy Space Center's Launch Complex 39A on November 12, 1981, proving that a crewed orbital spacecraft could be refurbished and flown again. NASA describes the shortened two-day test flight as focused on safe relaunch and return of the orbiter and crew. The mission also carried early science and applications payloads and included important testing of the Canadian-built Remote Manipulator System.
