STS-9 was Space Shuttle Columbia's first flight after modification for Spacelab and the first Spacelab mission. Launched from Launch Complex 39A on November 28, 1983, the six-person crew operated NASA and ESA-supported laboratory investigations in astronomy, atmospheric physics, Earth observations, life sciences, materials science, space plasma physics, and technology before landing at Edwards Air Force Base on December 8.
