- Vega 1 was a Soviet-led international mission that delivered a lander and instrumented balloon to Venus before its carrier used the planetary flyby to continue toward Comet Halley.

- The Venus lander and balloon returned atmospheric and surface observations in June 1985. The carrier then passed Comet Halley on March 6, 1986 at about 8,890 kilometers and imaged its nucleus and surrounding material.
