- Vega 2 was the companion Soviet-led Venus and Comet Halley mission. It released a lander and balloon into the Venusian atmosphere, then continued through the inner Solar System for a close comet encounter.

- The mission successfully operated its Venus lander and balloon in June 1985. Vega 2 subsequently flew about 8,030 kilometers from Comet Halley's nucleus on March 9, 1986 while returning images and in-situ measurements.
