The African Astronomical Society (AfAS) is a South Africa-registered nonprofit voluntary professional society that connects astronomers, astrophysicists, engineers, educators, students, and space-science partners across Africa. Formed by a pan-African initiative in 2010, relaunched in 2019, and fully operational since 2020, it advances astronomy and space science through research networks, conferences, seed grants, early-career awards, education and outreach, capacity building, observatory coordination, and international collaboration. Its current secretariat is hosted at the South African Astronomical Observatory in Cape Town.
