The Astronomical Society of Japan

The Astronomical Society of Japan (ASJ; 日本天文学会) is Japan’s public-interest incorporated professional association for the advancement and dissemination of astronomy. Founded in 1908, authorized as an incorporated association in 1935, and reorganized under Japan’s present public-interest corporation system in 2012, it connects professional researchers, students, institutions, and supporting organizations. ASJ holds major scientific meetings each spring and autumn, publishes the peer-reviewed Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan and the Japanese-language Tenmon Geppo, supports research and travel, recognizes scientific achievement, issues professional and public-policy statements, and runs education and outreach programs including public lectures, a junior session, and national astronomy initiatives. It remains active through its 2026 annual meetings and current scientific, publishing, heritage, and public-engagement work.
