The Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences (IAS) was an American professional society for aeronautical engineers and scientists. Founded in New York in 1932, it built a national membership and student-branch network, convened specialist technical meetings, published the Journal of the Aeronautical Sciences and other literature, developed major aeronautical indexes and archives, and maintained technical committees and awards. It renamed itself the Institute of the Aerospace Sciences as the field expanded into space, then merged with the American Rocket Society in 1963 to form AIAA.
