Sociedad Astronómica de México, A.C.

The Sociedad Astronómica de México, A.C. (SAM) is a Mexican nonprofit civil association for amateur astronomy, scientific education, observing, and public outreach. Founded in 1902 after observations of Nova Persei, it is one of the world’s oldest continuously significant amateur-astronomy societies and helped establish organized public astronomy in Mexico and Latin America. SAM brings together enthusiasts, educators, students, engineers, and researchers; teaches telescope optics and construction; holds lectures, workshops, observing nights, and children’s activities; publishes observing guidance and ephemerides; and preserves a historic astronomy library, planetarium, instruments, and observatory programs. It remains active in 2026 through public observing, education, technical workshops, current monthly ephemerides, and its three-site outreach network.
