A-SCOPE (Advanced Space Carbon and Climate Observation of Planet Earth) was an ESA Earth Explorer 7 candidate concept for measuring total-column atmospheric carbon dioxide with a nadir-looking pulsed Differential Absorption Lidar (DIAL). Its frequent, spatially resolved CO2 observations would support global carbon-budget analysis, regional source and sink studies, greenhouse-gas inventory validation, and related aerosol, cloud, surface-reflectivity, and plant-stress research. ESA assessment material documents the concept as a research mission rather than an implemented programme.
