E-Fan X was an Airbus and Rolls-Royce research programme investigating high-power serial hybrid-electric propulsion for commercial aircraft. Launched in 2017, it planned to replace one engine on a four-engine BAe 146 test aircraft with a two-megawatt electric motor. Research covered high-voltage systems, power distribution, batteries and future certification. The partners ended the demonstrator in April 2020 before its planned flight tests. Airbus reports that the work informed later electrification and decarbonisation research; this record does not imply a hybrid-electric E-Fan X flight took place.
