NASA's human lunar exploration program combined spacecraft development, flight testing, crew training, and scientific exploration of the Moon. Saturn IB supported Earth-orbit flights and Saturn V supported lunar flights; the Apollo spacecraft comprised command, service, and lunar modules. The program flew 11 crewed missions and achieved six lunar landings from 1969 to 1972, developing astronauts' ability to work on the surface as well as returning them safely to Earth.
