Deep Impact Program

NASA’s Deep Impact mission, the eighth Discovery Program mission, deployed an impactor into comet Tempel 1 on July 4, 2005 to expose and study material beneath the comet’s surface. The JPL-managed spacecraft later flew by comet Hartley 2 as EPOXI and conducted additional observations before the mission ended in September 2013.
