EUMETSAT Polar System – Second Generation Programme
EUMETSAT's mandatory EPS Second Generation programme develops a successor polar-orbiting meteorological system comprising Metop-SG spacecraft, ground infrastructure, products, and sustained weather and climate services. In June 2015 its Council concluded approval with commitments from all 30 member states and authorised programme-related agreements with ESA, CNES, and NOAA. Its purpose is to improve and expand first-generation EPS observations for operational weather forecasting, including forecasts up to ten days ahead. The programme covers that coordinated observing service, rather than a single satellite.
