Galileo is the European Union's civilian global satellite-navigation programme, providing positioning, navigation, timing, and related public services through space and ground infrastructure. The European Commission manages the programme on behalf of the EU. EUSPA manages service operations and procures launches for constellation deployment and replenishment, while ESA is entrusted with system design and evolution. These responsibilities distinguish the continuing service and infrastructure programme from a particular Galileo satellite generation; its applications include transport, emergency search and rescue, and everyday navigation.
