Giotto Programme

The European Space Agency’s Giotto Programme was ESA’s first deep-space mission, launched on July 2, 1985 to study Halley’s Comet at close range and later encounter comet Grigg–Skjellerup. Giotto returned high-resolution observations during the 1986 Halley encounter and demonstrated an extended comet mission after an Earth gravity assist.
