ESA's space-science planning extension drawn up in 1994–1995 followed Horizon 2000 and preceded Cosmic Vision. Its portfolio includes Gaia, LISA Pathfinder, and BepiColombo, covering stellar mapping, gravitational-wave technology validation, and Mercury exploration. LISA Pathfinder demonstrated technologies needed for the later LISA observatory. The programme name identifies a long-term planning framework whose spacecraft development, science operations, and data exploitation extend across many years.
