The International Ultraviolet Explorer Program was a joint NASA–ESA–United Kingdom orbital observatory launched on 26 January 1978 to obtain ultraviolet spectra of comets, planets, stars, supernovae, and active galaxies. IUE became the world’s longest-lived and one of its most productive spaceborne astronomy missions, operating continuously until decommissioning on 30 September 1996.
