NASA’s Environmentally Responsible Aviation project investigated aircraft technologies intended to reduce fuel use, community noise and nitrogen oxide emissions. Begun in 2009, its research covered advanced aircraft configurations, lightweight structures, propulsion and integrated technology demonstrations. NASA reports that the six-year project ended in 2015 after completing eight major demonstrations. Its projected fleet-level benefits were estimates for potential industry adoption, rather than measured reductions across airline operations.
