NASA’s Pioneer 6 Program was the first of a series of spacecraft launched at roughly six-month intervals to study interplanetary phenomena from heliocentric orbits near Earth’s. Launched on 16 December 1965, it returned measurements of the solar atmosphere, magnetic fields, plasma, and high-energy particles and helped establish space-based solar-weather monitoring before NASA’s last contact on 8 December 2000.
