ESA's Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission is an active Earth Explorer that maps global soil moisture over land and ocean salinity to improve understanding of Earth's water cycle, weather, and climate. Launched on 2 November 2009, its MIRAS L-band interferometric radiometer continues producing Earth-observation data.
