The Federal Aviation Administration Unmanned Aircraft Systems Integration Pilot Program (IPP) brought state, local, and tribal governments together with private-sector UAS operators and manufacturers to test and evaluate civil and public drone operations in the National Airspace System. Launched in 2017, the program addressed technical, regulatory, security, privacy, and policy challenges; advanced complex operations such as night flights, operations over people, beyond visual line of sight, package delivery, detect-and-avoid, and command-and-control link testing; and informed FAA rulemaking and approvals. IPP concluded on October 25, 2020, and BEYOND launched as its successor on October 26, 2020.
