General Electric J79 is a variable-stator afterburning turbojet family first flown in 1955 for Mach 2 aircraft. J79-15 provides about 17,000 lb of thrust for F-4C/D aircraft and J79-17 about 17,900 lb for F-4E; the family also powered the B-58 Hustler, F-104 Starfighter, North American RA-5 Vigilante, IAI Kfir/F-21, and related military platforms. Nearly 17,000 engines were built, and CJ805 commercial and LM1500 industrial derivatives extend its lineage while specialist support keeps legacy fleets serviceable.
