Lycoming O-540 is a family of six-cylinder, horizontally opposed, air-cooled aircraft piston engines with direct drive. A carburetor supplies a central induction passage and individual pipes distribute the fuel-air mixture to the cylinders. Airframe baffles direct cooling air through the cylinder fins. Cessna R182, TR182 and earlier T182 installations use specific O-540 variants; induction and installation details must therefore be read at the model level, while the related IO-540 denotes the fuel-injected branch.
