Packard V-1650 Merlin

The Packard V-1650 Merlin is the American-built version of the Rolls-Royce Merlin, a liquid-cooled V-12 aircraft piston engine. Rolls-Royce supplied the design and Packard manufactured engines under licence in the United States, expanding wartime Merlin production. Packard-built Merlins powered aircraft including the North American P-51 Mustang. The V-1650 designation covers multiple versions; the Smithsonian's surviving V-1650-7 is a specific example whose rating should not be applied to every Packard Merlin.
