Chemical Automatics Design Bureau (KBKhA) RD-0109 is a single-chamber liquid-oxygen/kerosene engine for the reliable Block E third stage of Vostok launch vehicles, developed from RD-0105 with a new chamber and improved performance and reliability. KBKhA reports 5.56 metric-ton-force (approximately 54.5 kN) vacuum thrust and 323.5 s vacuum specific impulse. The standard engine first flew on 1960-12-22; a 1960 production engine later launched the Vostok spacecraft carrying Yuri Gagarin on 1961-04-12.
