Historical University of KwaZulu-Natal student-inclusive aerospace research group and predecessor to ASRI. Official UKZN sources document 18 postgraduate and undergraduate students contributing to the Phoenix-1B Mk IIr hybrid sounding rocket campaign, which reached 17.9 km and set an African hybrid-rocket altitude record. ASReG developed and tested hybrid rocket vehicles and propulsion systems; the current successor is UKZN’s Aerospace Systems Research Institute.
