South Dakota State University’s extracurricular Human Exploration Rover Challenge team designs and builds remote-controlled planetary-rover prototypes. Its six-student 2026 team developed TERRA, a battery-powered rover carrying water-pH, air-carbon-dioxide and soil-moisture sensing capabilities. Students undertook design and operational-readiness reviews, construction and field testing before finishing second in the college remote-control division at NASA HERC in Huntsville on 10–11 April 2026. Several members brought experience from the university’s earlier RASC-AL rover work; participation was voluntary and separate from required or elective classes.
