The ATR 42 and ATR 72 form a closely related family of high-wing regional turboprop transports developed through French-Italian industrial cooperation. The original ATR 42 established the design, while the stretched ATR 72 increased passenger and cargo capacity. Successive generations modernized propulsion, avionics, cabins, and operational capability, and dedicated freighter versions extended the family beyond scheduled passenger service.
