The Avro Lancaster was a four-engine aircraft family developed from the Avro Manchester and first flown in 1941. It became a central Royal Air Force heavy-aircraft design of the Second World War, while Canadian-built and postwar variants extended the airframe into photographic survey, maritime patrol, search-and-rescue, and research duties. Most Lancasters used Merlin engines, with a distinct Bristol Hercules-powered production series.
