The Avro Canada VZ-9 Avrocar was a circular peripheral-jet-lift VTOL research aircraft developed for U.S. Army and Air Force studies. Three gas generators drove a central fan and peripheral lift system intended to provide hover and forward flight, but ground-effect instability, insufficient thrust-to-weight ratio, and inadequate low-speed control prevented successful transition to sustained wing-borne flight.
