Bell XV-3 Tiltrotor Research Aircraft Family

The Bell XV-3 was a two-aircraft U.S. Air Force/U.S. Army research program that proved a practical tiltrotor could take off and hover like a helicopter, then rotate its wingtip rotors for airplane-mode flight. The surviving second aircraft carried the program through the first stable full conversion and supplied the technology lineage later refined by the XV-15 and V-22.
