The Boeing 727 is a three-engine narrow-body jetliner designed to connect smaller airports and shorter runways with the speed and reach of the emerging jet age. Its rear-mounted engines, T-tail, built-in auxiliary power unit, and highly effective high-lift system let it operate with less ground infrastructure than earlier jet transports. Passenger, convertible, and freighter versions made the 727 a worldwide short- and medium-haul workhorse, and a small number continue in specialist cargo and emergency-response service.
