Cessna 172 Skyhawk General Aviation Family

The Cessna 172 Skyhawk is a four-seat, high-wing general-aviation family that became a worldwide training and personal-transport reference through its tricycle-gear layout, long production life, and broad service base. Its importance is educational as much as numerical: generations of pilots learned to fly in the type while the core design remained an adaptable civil platform. This family boundary keeps model-year and production variants, Reims/FMA derivatives, T-41 military derivatives, operators, individual airframes, Events, installations, and propulsion distinct. A modified Cessna 172 also became a civil research platform for automated flight. Reliable Robotics reported an uncrewed test in September 2019 in which its retrofit system automated taxi, takeoff, and landing under remote control. The experiment was part of the company's development and certification work on aircraft automation.
