NASA and the U.S. Air Force's CRRES was launched on 25 July 1990 into geosynchronous transfer orbit to investigate fields, plasmas, and energetic particles in Earth's magnetosphere, while chemical-release experiments and the SPACERAD project studied radiation-belt dynamics and radiation effects on spacecraft electronics. Contact was lost on 12 October 1991 after the mission observed a newly formed radiation belt.
