The Hiller VZ-1 Pawnee family comprised a series of U.S. flying-platform demonstrators built around a ducted fan and contra-rotating rotors. Early VZ-1 configurations used two engines and a standing pilot, the second Pawnee used three engines and a larger duct with cross-shafting, and the final VZ-1E added a deeper duct, seated pilot, and aerodynamic control vanes.
