The Kawanishi N1K1 Kyofu was the only World War II aircraft designed specifically as a single-float fighter for air superiority over beachheads when carrier or land-based fighters were unavailable. Its prototype flew on 6 May 1942, revised service trials followed in August, and 89 production aircraft plus eight prototypes were built before the type’s short operational career ended.
