Kosmos-2I was the light, two-stage R-12-derived branch of the Soviet Kosmos launch-vehicle program. The line began flying in 1961, launched the first spacecraft to receive a Kosmos designation in March 1962, and remained in use through 1977 for small military and scientific payloads from Kapustin Yar and Plesetsk.
