Kosmos was the name applied to two related Soviet light orbital-launch lineages developed from ballistic missiles. The R-12-derived Kosmos-2 branch flew from the early 1960s through 1977, while the heavier R-14-derived Kosmos-3 line culminated in the long-serving Kosmos-3M. Together they placed hundreds of military, scientific, navigation, communications, and technology payloads into low and medium Earth orbits.
