LARES-2 is ASI’s passive nickel-alloy laser-ranging sphere, 424 mm in diameter and about 297.5 kg in mass. Its 303 one-inch corner-cube reflectors return laser pulses to ground stations. The dense body and matching-alloy mounting components reduce radiation-pressure and thermal disturbances on the orbit. The design is distinct from the smaller tungsten-alloy LARES satellite and operates near 6000 km altitude to support frame-dragging tests and geodetic measurements.
