The Lockheed Martin X-35 was the concept-demonstrator family developed for the Joint Strike Fighter competition. X-35A demonstrated conventional takeoff and flight, X-35B explored short-takeoff and vertical-landing capability, and X-35C represented the carrier variant; the demonstrators won the 2001 competition and established the design lineage that became the production F-35 Lightning II.
