McDonnell XV-1 Compound Helicopter Convertiplane Research Aircraft Family

The McDonnell XV-1 Convertiplane was a two-prototype compound helicopter research family that combined a pressure-jet-driven rotor, wings, and a pusher propeller to operate in helicopter, autogyro, and airplane modes. NASA and the Army used the aircraft to study rotorcraft-to-airplane conversion, high-speed compound flight, and the aerodynamic tradeoffs of sharing lift between rotor and wing.
