Mercury spacecraft

The Mercury spacecraft was the one-person capsule developed for the first United States human-spaceflight program. Fifteen physical flight articles in the production-number sequence supported abort, launch-vehicle, reentry, primate, and crewed tests from 1960 through 1963. Six capsules carried astronauts; earlier uncrewed vehicles qualified the escape, heat-shield, recovery, and life-support systems that made those flights possible.
