The Messerschmitt Bf 109 was a German single-seat, single-engine fighter family whose low-wing, retractable-gear design evolved through successive versions from the mid-1930s into the postwar period. First flown in 1935, it became the Luftwaffe's principal day fighter and was produced in very large numbers, with variants serving in fighter, reconnaissance, training, and export roles. The Bf designation remained in official use even after Bayerische Flugzeugwerke was renamed Messerschmitt AG.
