N1 was the Soviet super-heavy launch vehicle developed for the crewed N1-L3 lunar-landing programme. Its enormous kerosene and liquid-oxygen first stage used thirty NK-15 engines, followed by clustered upper propulsion; all four uncrewed test vehicles launched from Baikonur between 1969 and 1972 were lost before reaching orbit.
