The Northrop X-21 was a pair of modified research aircraft used by the United States Air Force and Northrop to demonstrate full-scale laminar-flow control through boundary-layer suction. Its 1963-1964 flight program obtained pioneering data on spanwise contamination, surface irregularities, and environmental effects, proving the technology while exposing the maintenance and manufacturing challenges that later research had to solve.
