The Northrop X-4 Bantam was a two-aircraft semi-tailless research family built to test swept-wing stability and control near the transonic regime. Its elevon-controlled, horizontal-tail-less configuration exposed pitch oscillation, tucking, and inertial-coupling problems while supplying flight data that helped designers avoid an unstable dead end and later revisit tailless layouts with advanced controls.
