NOTS Pilot (EV-1) air-launched orbital vehicle

Project Pilot, nicknamed NOTSNIK and later designated NOTS-EV-I, was a classified U.S. Navy attempt to create a rapid-response orbital launcher at the Naval Ordnance Test Station. The five-stage, all-solid vehicle was air-launched from an F4D-1 Skyray; six orbital attempts were made from 1958-07-25 through 1958-08-28, but none produced a confirmed, sustained orbit.
