Able 1 (Pioneer 0) lunar-orbiter spacecraft family

Able 1, later called Pioneer 0, was the first attempted deep-space launch by any nation and the first U.S. attempt to send a spacecraft to the Moon. The 1958 lunar-orbiter probe’s Thor first stage exploded shortly after liftoff, ending the mission before it left Earth.
