The R-36 was a Soviet two-stage, silo-launched heavy ballistic-missile family developed by OKB-586 (KB Yuzhnoye). Flight testing of the 8K67 began at Baikonur in 1963; several payload variants were fielded, including the distinct R-36O fractional-orbit configuration, and the original R-36 generation was retired in 1978.
